Are you changing any stats as you go along or are you keeping them all the way they are?
ReplyDeleteI'm not changing any stats, but in some cases I might add a clarification to a special ability. Sometimes a bit of detail is useful in a monster's stat block that would be redundant in part of the actual monster description. But in general, I'm keeping them exactly the same since it's like a free supplement to the book itself. Then people can make changes however they want, and know they're not working from something that's already been tweaked.
ReplyDeleteIt strikes me that having all the monster entries in a database format would be handy for this sort of project. Once the fields are defined and all the data in place, you can just get the database app to squirt out the statblocks as and when required, and they could be ordered by dangerousness, environment, eye colour or whatever. MS Office has Access, and I know that OpenOffice includes a db app, but unfortunately I don't know enough about how to work one even to get started.
ReplyDeleteI wrote a web page Battlesheet Generator (http://nat20s.com/HMB/BattlesheetGenerator.aspx) that had all the monster stats in a database and then did something like that for Hackmaster Basic. Something like that might be awesome for Tome of Horrors (S&W version).

I'm happy to do the web portion, as it would just require minor tweaks to what I'd done for HMB. I'm just not keen on the data entry. If all the monster stats were in an Excel spreadsheet or something like that, it'd make it really easy for me to import it into a database, and then spit it back out on a web page.
ReplyDeleteLooking at your stat blocks above, it's also possible I could parse those out as long as they're always in the same format and stat order, with semi-colons separating the stats.
Derek, they will be in the same format - the only potential problem is that the entry for "Special" uses a colon (the info after the colon is part of the "Special" category.

ReplyDeleteRazberry Ranid has actually done several more, so once I back those out of pdf format (won't take long, just haven't gotten to it) I should be able to post a longer list of stats.
