The pdf of Necromancer Games' Tome of Horrors has been released for Swords & Wizardry (and also Pathfinder). The download-bandwidth of a 230MB file being downloaded by hundreds of people almost simultaneously ... promptly crashed the servers both at Paizo and Frog God.
The Frog God server is back up again as of 2AM Eastern time, the Paizo server was still being untangled when I talked to Bill Webb this morning.
For anyone who didn't buy the physical book, pdfs will be available for independent purchase soon, but both Paizo and Frog God have temporarily removed their "sale" buttons until the downloads from book-buyers have slowed down a bit. When the feeding frenzy subsides, the sale buttons will show up again at both sites (I don't think Paizo is distributing the S&W downloads, so it's only the FGG server that's relevant to us).
Anyway, for the S&W Tome downloads, the problem is now fixed, but I wanted to let people know the status, and for those who plan on getting the pdf without the book you should be able to do so soon. I do not know the exact definition of "soon" in this context, but ... soon.
EDIT: Tenkar's first impressions are HERE.
Matt: Paizo also has Tome of Horrors (0e) listed under Frog God Games/Swords & Wizardry (0e) and it appears the PDF is available there right now.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to everyone involved for what appears to be a very successful product!
For Pathfinder it's already clear that it's going to be an absolute home run, out of the park. The reviews coming in are stellar and they haven't even seen John Stater's encounters/hexes for the monsters. When they see those, I think it becomes another Rappan Athuk.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I'm hearing so far in the old school community, people are extremely happy with it. It's such a huge book that there probably won't be any full-scale reviews for a few days. I didn't send any review copies out ahead of time -- I probably should have.
I'm looking forward to getting this! :D
ReplyDeleteMatt, ToHC is a beast... a beautiful beast! I don't know if I will ever get a chance to review it... unless... maybe if Ibroke down the review by section - "A" entries, then "B" entries ;)
ReplyDeleteThe hooks / encounters are awesome, as is the art, as is the layout... they done did good.
JMS does such a beautiful job with Land of Nod, I'd be surprised if you weren't right!
